Mansa Devi Temple, Haridwar is situated on top of the Bilwa Parvat, which is located among the Sivalik Hills in Uttarakhand. The temple, which is also known by the name Bilwa Tirth, is one among the five pilgrimages (Panch Tirth) in the holy city of Haridwar. It is one of the most ancient and holy pilgrimage sites in India. The temple is one of the Siddh Peetas in Haridwar. The other two are Maya Devi Temple and Chandi Devi Temple. It is believed that Goddesses Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi are always present close to one another. The Goddess is considered to be the sister of the Serpent King – Vasuki.

It is said that Amrit fell on Haridwar when Garuda was carrying the Amrit in a pitcher (Kumbha). The Kumbh Mela is celebrated in Haridwar to commemorate the celestial occurrence. The Kumbh Mela is also celebrated in Allahabad, Ujjain and Nashik.

Legend has it that Mansa Devi, a form of Shakti, took up Her abode in the temple. The Goddess is said to have emerged from Lord Shiva’s mind. The word Mansa essentially means wish, and devotees believe that the Goddess fulfills their desires. Devotees praying for fulfillment of wishes tie threads to branches of a tree situated in the temple. After their wishes are fulfilled, the devotees visit the temple and untie the threads. The Mother is also offered incense sticks, garlands, fruits and coconuts. The shrine comprises two deities. While one deity possesses eight arms, the other deity is depicted with three heads and five arms. Mansa Devi Temple attracts a large number of devotees from all parts of the world, particularly during the Navratri festival and the Kumbh Mela.
